Letter to the Editor: Speaks about improvements coming to Crawford State Forest

Crawford State Forest is 245 acres on Pocahontas Trail. The forest was donated in 1989 and has suffered from neglect.

This Fall, Virginia’s Department of Forestry (VDF) and Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to remove trees at the entrance of the parking lot. These trees severely limit the site line for cars leaving the lot. VDOT and VDF does not want to promote increased traffic at the site until they have done all they can to improve conditions for visitors. Second, they plan to expand and re-gravel the parking area to allow for increased parking.

As part of this, VDOT and VDF will refurbish the landscaping around the dedication monument. They will also work to have recreational highway signs placed on both sides of Pocahontas Trail.

Crawford State Forest is in District 4, and New Kent District 4 Supervisor Ron Stiers believes that a kayak/canoe launch onto the Chickahominy River would be ideal for this location.

Crawford State Forest is a very valuable recreational space to New Kent County.
