Charles City High School’s Class of 2025 graduates knew that they were about the quality and not the quantity.
Twenty members of the graduating class were heralded for their achievements and bright futures during Saturday morning’s commencement ceremonies at Charles City High School.
Salutatorian India Harris spoke to her classmates about knowing the day that they would cross the stage would eventually occur.
“We had several journeys along the way,” she commented. “We laughed, played, talked, and grew up together.
“Today, we celebrate the present,” Harris continued. “We got here with strength, dignity, and support.
“We’re more than SOLs and transcripts,” the salutatorian added as her speech wrapped up. “We are thinkers, creators and believers. God’s plan is bigger than what we could ever hope for and we have made it.”
Charles City High School Valedictorian Olivia Adkins also echoed the growth throughout the years with her classmates.
“We are not the same kids that came through the doors in seventh grade,” she commented. “We have grown and learned to appreciate the little things in our life and value our community.
“Don’t be afraid to take risks and push boundaries,” the valedictorian added. “We have the power to shape the future, so don’t let doubt hold you back.”
Charles City High School Principal Anita Harper asked students to reflect on their past when preparing for their future.
“You were more than a paper, math problems, and literature,” she said. “This is just the newest chapter in your journey.
“Your deepest beliefs will shape you,” Harper continued. “As you step in the future, carry the courage of a Panther. Roar loud and stand proud.”
Keynote speaker Jeffrey Hayes provided three points of wisdom for outgoing seniors.
“First, be clear on what you want,” he began his speech. “You have ideas to explore, dreams to realize. In order to experience the things you want you may have to experience the things you don’t want.
“Second, get some new friends,” Hayes continued. “I’m not saying rid of the old ones but be open to cultivating friendships. Don’t be quick to judge people off their first interactions because those people that may get on your nerve when you first meet them could be your best friends later. Friendliness goes a long way.
“Finally, be bold and fearless in your approach,” Hayes said as he wrapped up his speech. “Don’t approach your future at half speed.”
“I’m so very proud of you,” commented Charles City Superintendent of Schools Dalphine Joppy. “I have seen you graduates as you played, learned, and watched the times that transformed you into the young adults you are today.
“Believe in yourself because the world will be loud,” she continued. “The world will be loud. Block out the noise. Know that your story matters and chase your dreams boldly.”
School board chairman Rodney Tyler offered his congratulations to the Class of 2025.
“This is the start of a new day and beginning as you leave Charles City,” he said. “I know these moments didn’t come easy, but you made it.
“You’re not just finishing something, you’re stepping into something greater, and I wish you all the success, Charles City High School Class of 2025.”
