Letter to the Editor: Says New Kent can protect county with forested buffers

One of New Kent’s most cherish qualities is its scenic rural atmosphere. For residents and visitors alike, the tree-lined road that wind through our community, along with farm and pasture land, are a visible reminder of our commitment to preserving the natural beauty and tranquility that define our county. As development continues, it is critical that we take proactive steps to maintain this character.

A key strategy in achieving this is the preservation of forested buffers along our county roads. These wooded strips serve not only as visual shields, softening the impact of development, but also as important environmental assets, supporting local wildlife, controlling erosion, and improving air and water quality. Unfortunately, in the absence of clear requirements, these mature forested buffers are often the first casualties of new construction. Once gone, they are difficult, if not impossible to restore.

I urge our county planners and the board of supervisors to consider incorporating a formal forested buffer requirement into New Kent’s zoning and land-use regulations. Such a measure would ensure that future development respects the landscape and character that make our county special. Preserving our rural charm is not anti-growth; it’s smart growth. Thoughtful planning that includes natural buffers will help us grow in a way that reflects the values of our community.

I encourage all New Kent citizens who care about the beauty of our county to speak up and ask our planners and supervisors to support stronger protections for these important forested corridors.
