The message given Saturday morning to 31 members of Charles City High School’s Class of 2026 was simple: Life isn’t easy, but don’t give up.

Those words echoed through Charles City High School’s gymnasium in front of family, friends, and community members as cheers supported the new graduates as part of commencement ceremonies.

As the Class of 2026 sat attentively, messages of building character and never caving in when pressure seems to put them in uncomfortable situations.

“Some of you have moments when you questioned yourself, your future, and your worth, and whether you would even make it to this day, but you did,” said Charles City Superintendent of Schools Dr. Katina Otey. “You kept showing up and that matters.”

Otey continued her message, letting students know that they should always be strong and refuse to quit no matter how hard obstacles may become. She added that even if they fail, it will lead to the pathway of success.

Charles City High School Class of 2026 Salutatorian James Black IV told his classmates that they all mattered and should continue to work hard because it’s in their hands.

“It only takes one person to make a difference, so why not be the one to start,” he said, challenging his classmates. “Do not let where you come from dictate where you are going.”

Class Valedictorian Nina Cannada cited her faith in Christ, saying how everyone had their own battles during their journey.

“I was dealing with migraines during school and that was a challenge,” she said. “But the love from Jesus Christ and support system at school and at home got me through.

“I love each and very one of you and I am happy to live out my elementary and high school days with each of you,” Cannada concluded.
