Letter to the Editor: Charles City leaders need to support pay increases for school employees

By Community Member | May 12, 2021 7:46 pm

When my family moved to Charles City in 2016, I began attending school board meetings and the board of supervisors’ meetings regularly. A few years ago, the schools looked into partnering with a private company to increase energy efficiency and get much needed upgrades to the school buildings at a savings to the county. The solution looked to be win-win. Maintenance costs would go down and surplus funds could be reallocated to better compensation. With planned upgrades and savings to the schools’ maintenance, there was a chance to more fairly compensate teachers. Our teachers make $11,000 less than the state-wide…

Editorial: Internet is a utility; everybody deserves access to it

By Andre Jones | May 9, 2021 7:43 pm

Access to the Internet in Charles City has been… Correct that. “Lack of Internet access,” in Charles City has been a nightmare to constituents since 2014. And even with a grant provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide services to the community, there are caveats, and it seems to mount frustration for some residents. Editorial: There are still good people in this world

By Andre Jones | May 3, 2021 9:07 pm

Despite the everyday outlooks that society is portrayed as because of several negative connotations, there are still good people in this world. As a member of the news media, I often write about the happenings that are taking place. Unfortunately, this ranges from the heartbreaking story to the negativity of crimes being committed to the trials and tribulations people have to unfortunately relive in court cases. But there are times where the positives still highlight who we are as people. And while working multiple jobs on the same day at Charles City County’s Farmers’ Market, it was clear that there…

Letter to the Editor: Enjoyed Charles City County’s Farmer’s Market

By Community Member | May 3, 2021 11:07 am

My husband and I very much enjoyed the First Annual Charles City County Farmer’s Market this past Saturday. Every vendor was polite and helpful, and each explained his or her product or service politely and completely. The alpaca was very cute, and my husband discovered some great future gift items for his loving wife while sniffing the air in hopes of locating a fried foods vendor nearby. I especially want to express how very impressed I was with one vendor. After purchasing an item and had a problem with it, the vendor returned to the marketplace and rectified it by…
