A New Kent woman who was adamant about providing equal opportunities for education is now the namesake of a scholarship through Virginia Commonwealth’s University (VCU) School of Business. Oraphine Watkins Crump was deemed a trailblazer in her pursuit of education for all students. She served as a branch manager of Consolidated Bank and Trust for 25 years. Probably of more notoriety, she was the first African-American woman to serve on New Kent County’s School Board. If impeachment is unattainable by the democrats, I hear Senator Tim Kaine has proposed that the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution should be used against former President Donald Trump. The amendment states that anyone guilty of “insurrection or rebellion” against the United States shall not be eligible to hold an elective office in the United States. Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma Club is offering two scholarship grants to graduating students of New Kent High School. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a New Kent High School Senior pursuing a college education at either a community college or four-year institution. Jeffrey McCuistion, a resident of Providence Forge, recently earned a degree from the University of the Cumberlands. McCuistion earned a Master of Science in Justice Administration at the end of the Fall 2020 semester.
Mikaela Jefferson, a 2018 graduate of New Kent High School, has been named to the Dean’s List at Old Dominion University for the Fall 2020 semester. In order to be recognized for the achievement, a student must be enrolled full-time by taking at least 12 credit hours and accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or better.
