Sela McDowell, a resident of Providence Forge, has been inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). NSCS is recognized the nation’s leading certified honor society for high-achieving first and second-year college students who post a grade-point average of 3.0 or better.
Three New Kent High School seniors and a New Kent resident have been awarded scholarships from St. Peter’s Parish Church. Clayton Evelyn, Alayna Loveland, Caroline Jones, and Lydia Danielson are recipients of the Louis Miller Clopton and William Boyd Clopton Memorial Scholarship. Each scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 apiece, was awarded to each graduating senior based on their strong moral character, religious involvement, community service, motivation, and academic success. Evelyn plans to attend Virginia Tech University upon his graduation, while Danielson will head to Christopher Newport University to further her studies. I’m hoping this will be the last editorial I write about COVID-19. But my focus isn’t on the pandemic itself. It’s on the reflection and appreciation of being around others. When we do go back to a “new” normal way of life, we will be living with the virus. It will never be totally eradicated. It will never truly disappear from this earth. We will adopt to the results of the disease and hope for the best. Schools and businesses will open slowly, but affiliation will keep us distant. New Kent’s Lions Club is offering a $1,000 to one graduating senior from both New Kent High School and Charles City High School that have been accepted to an institution of higher learning. Selection will be based upon community service, with consideration given to leadership, future goals, extracurricular activities, and need. The Earl Scott Memorial Scholarship is available through CCHS’s scholarship tracker at https://cchs.ccps.net/groups/74580/guidance/home. The Mac L. A local farm-based community outreach organization in Charles City has partnered with church and community volunteers to establish the community’s first permanent food pantry. Promise Land Pastures, located at 9620 Adkins Road, began operations on April 13 to meet ongoing community needs to establish the non-profit community pantry. New Kent County Public Schools will now distribute grab and go meals to cover the entire week. “Grab and Go” meals provided by the school system will be available for pickup every Monday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at New Kent High School. The meals prepared and provided will be used to provide nutrition to students while facilities are closed. Adults must accompany each child under the age of 18 who needs a meal. During this period in world history, we sit back and wait for things to get back to normal. However, there are steps we can take so that we do not bring on our own demise.
