Scholarships available for Rappahannock Community College

More than $400,000 in available scholarships are now available to students who plan to enroll at Rappahannock Community College in the next academic year (2020-21). Scholarships are available to full-time and part-time students. Applicants complete one form which will make them eligible for all scholarships. Deadline to apply for scholarships is Friday, Feb. 14. Jones appointed Chief Operating Officer for NCUA

Rendell Jones, a 1990 graduate of Charles City High School, has been named as deputy executive director and chief operating officer of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Jones previously worked for United States Citizen and Immigration Services from Dec. 2013-July 2014 as the agency’s acting deputy director. He also served as deputy budget director of the Department of Homeland Security. Jones began his career working for the federal service in 1996 with the Department of Justice. Jones will officially begin his duties on Feb. 2.

Editorial: We shouldn’t stress about the little things in life

LaSertoma offering Youth Service Award

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma is pleased to announce through fundraisers, the organization will sponsor a $150 Youth Service Award to a New Kent student. The award is to recognize a youth in the community that exemplifies leadership and community service. To be eligible, a student must be a resident of New Kent and recognized for outstanding performance in the areas of volunteer community service and school-required service activities. Applications are available at each of the New Kent schools’ guidance offices, or by calling Brenda Johnston at 932-9423. Applications are due by Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Three named to College of William and Mary’s Dean’s List

Three local students were named to the College of William and Mary’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2019 semester. Abigail Carlson and Jonah Sweeney, both of Providence Forge, and Justin Mitchell, of New Kent, earned the honor of acknowledgement for their academic excellence. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must be taking classes full-time and accumulate a quality-point average of 3.6 or higher.

New Kent Stagehands announce audition dates for one-act plays

New Kent’s Stagehands have announced that it will have open auditions for its upcoming production. New Kent’s Stagehands will hold auditions on Feb. 3 and Feb. 5 for three comedic shorts. The one-act plays “Driver’s Test”, “Life Line”, and “Y’all” will be performed by the organization Apr. 17-19. Auditions will take place at New Kent Middle School.
