Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma has awarded three scholarships to New Kent County High School seniors. Lindsey Johnson and Tyler Williams, two of the recipients who also attend Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center, were selected to receive technical scholarship grants to continue their studies in their respective trades. Johnson received a scholarship to continue her studies in nursing, while Williams will utilize his awards as he studies computer science. New Kent EDA offering $5,000 business loans to cope with COVID-19

New Kent’s Economic Development Authority (EDA) is repurposing $50,000 of its appropriated budget to provide loans to local businesses. The EDA is establishing a loan recovery program to assist with businesses that did not receive funds from the state or federal government despite funds being allocated for those purposes. According to New Kent EDA representative Matthew Starr, the program will allow a small business to apply for a loan up to $5,000 maximum. New Kent Rotary Club announces scholarship winners

The Rotary Club of New Kent has announced the winners of the Thelma Crump Wilson Rotary and the Rotary Bridging Communities Scholarships. Annabelle Brame, Diamond Brown, Gabriel Fisher, and Alayna Loveland were each awarded the Thelma Crump Rotary Memorial Scholarship at $1,000 apiece. Cole Saunders and Tyler Williams were announced as the winners of the Rotary Bridging Communities Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each.

Richart earns Dean’s List honors at Virginia Tech

Hailey Richart, a 2017 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to Virginia Tech University’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2020 semester. In order to earn the accolade, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher while taking at least 12 credit hours.

Editorial: Reopening the state doesn’t mean you have to return to society

COVID-19 test kit site available in Charles City

Virginia’s Department of Health (VDH) will be offering a COVID-19 test kit site for residents of Charles City and New Kent County who are displaying common symptoms of the virus. Testing will be available on Friday, May 15, from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Chickahominy Tribal Center, located at 8200 Lott Cary Road, Providence Forge, Virginia (Located in Charles City County). Pre-registration is required and all of those interested will be pre-screened for common symptoms. Pre-registration may be arranged by calling (804) 365-3340 and must be completed by May 14, 12 p.m.
