Kara Harris, an Exercise Physiology major from New Kent, was inducted in Florida State University’s Garnet and Gold Scholar Society on Apr. 25. She was one of 314 students to be inducted into the special society. To be inducted, a student must meet the engagement area criteria and submit a synthesis reflection project before graduation. The society also highlights student involvement within the classroom and outside the classroom in the areas of international experience, internship, leadership, research, and service.
New Kent Sheriff J. Joseph (Joe) McLaughlin Jr. was elected to serve on the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute (VSI) Board of Directors as a board member. He was elected at the annual meeting by his peers to hold the position and will serve a one-year term with the organization’s goals of increasing public safety, crime prevention, and issues relating to management.
Two events will impact both New Kent and Charles City County this weekend. On Saturday, May 4, from 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m., motorists can expect delays as the Uncorked Half and 5K will take place in New Kent. Roads effected include Angel Share Drive, Old Church Road, Talleysville Road, and Old River Road. Sheriff’s officers will be on scene to guide drivers during this time. Growth isn’t just limited to the population and school system in New Kent County. It also applies to local businesses, such as the case Monday morning. New Kent’s Winery became the recipient of a $15,000 grant from Virginia’s Agricultural and Forestry Industries Development (AFID), the first for the county. The grant will be distributed through New Kent’s Economic Development Authority (EDA).
