Editorial: Let’s continue to eliminate discrimination

By Andre Jones | April 10, 2019 10:17 am

With the recent historical marker dedication in Charles City, it serves as a grim reminder that we still have a long way to go in life when it comes to discrimination. As humans, we are tasked to work together as one in order to make this world a better place. Despite our disagreements, there are times where obstacles can be overcome with teamwork. Unfortunately, there are some experiences of hatred for unjust reasons that exist today. Ranging from race to sexual orientation to financial status to having a disability, the separation gap continues to exist. Even the thought about someone…

Letter to the Editor: Says Peace deceived people on Medicaid expansion

By Community Member | April 9, 2019 12:36 pm

I recently listened to Chris Peace interviews on a radio show. He has the gift of spin, as when he was asked about Medicaid expansion, he said it was “conservative welfare reform.” What is conservative about expanding welfare to more than 400,000 people? And reform means to find ways to help people get off welfare, not make them more dependent on the government. I am extremely disappointed in Del. Peace’s flip-flopping on this very important issue. Charles City historical marker becomes first to commemorate lynching victim

By Robb Johnson | April 9, 2019 3:09 am

A historic marker unveiling for Isaac Brandon, a man wrongfully lynched, took place on Apr. 7 near the location of where the former tree he hung from stood. On Apr. 6, 1892, the 43-year old Brandon was accused of assaulting a white female. A mob of angry men sought out Brandon, locating him and…

Editorial: Preparing future generations the best way possible

By Andre Jones | April 2, 2019 12:45 pm

As generations evolve and time passes, there are a lot of differences of what we define what’s best for the next generation. It’s a difficult subject to tackle because as with the generations before us, they positioned themselves as a precaution to help the current generation. Truth be told, while we attempt to handle and set up the future for success, knowing what is defined as “success” differs for each person. A perfect example is the educational system that continuously has standards change. School systems are curtailing to what is now being described as the “profile of a graduate.” While…

Trojan Theatre’s ‘Star of the Day’ camp provides opportunity, inspiration for youth

By Robb Johnson | March 30, 2019 11:33 pm

As time passes, the transition from childhood to young adult means more responsibilities and setting an example as a role model. For New Kent High School’s Trojan Theatre ensemble, it was the opportunity to provide some fun to a group of youngsters and open a door to the fine arts. Theatre students took the next step in enhancing their program, hosting the first “Star for a Day” workshop on March 23 for students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Months prior to their performance, Trojan Theatre began working on their presentation of “James and the Giant Peach”, part of their annual…
