Bonner makes UVA’s Dean’s List

Sherese Bonner, a 2017 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Virginia for the 2018 Spring semester. In order to receive the honor, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher while taking at least 15 credit hours.

As I went out with my sister and nephew to the movie theater last weekend to enjoy a viewing of “The Incredibles 2”, (warning, minor spoilers) there was a certain scene that my sister paused and said to me, “Did I just hear them say [the D word]?” I told her I didn’t think so. Several local residents have been named to the Honors’ List and Dean’s List at John Tyler Community College for the Spring 2018 semester. Charles City residents Laurie Burnette and Javel Jefferson, Lanexa resident Matthew Woodson, and Quinton residents Nina Brundle, Kelly Gellings, and Kaylin Seely all were named to the Honor’s List. Making the Dean’s List is Charles City resident Cheyaenne Cotman. Snead awarded Fary Memorial scholarship

Michael Todd Snead, a 2018 graduate of New Kent High School, is the recipient of the Thomas Peterson and Alvin Jenettie Roane Fary Memorial Scholarship. Snead was awarded the scholarship worth $24,000. He will be attending Virginia Tech and plans to major in engineering.

Letter to the Editor: Sheriff’s office should handle Charles City litter issue

The core problem with litter in Charles City is the lack of law enforcement. Accountability for littering is two-fold; the sheriff’s department and those who litter day after the day, trashing up our roads and personal property. Our litter laws, if enforced, will bring large fines to polluters, which, in turn, will result in a clean town as part of “keeping America beautiful.” After VDOT (Virginia’s Department of Transportation) workers regularly clean out littered ditches, polluters show their contempt for the law and fellow citizens by tossing more trash right next to the orange litter bags that are bundled up…

Quimby named to Dean’s List at High Point University

Zacheriah Quimby, a resident of Providence Forge, was named to High Point University’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2018 semester. Quimby is double majoring in history and political science. He was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta History and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Societies. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must accumulated a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Most people want to give back to a good cause. Fundraisers have been a strong establishment for the basis of raising money to support organizations and groups for several years. From Brunswick stew sales to support Juan Mickel-Jones in New Kent to dinner sales for the #keepfightingChip campaign, the intentions are pure at heart and people come from miles away just to support it. But unfortunately, the days of fundraising are becoming more complicated than helpful.
