Gregory named to Virginia Tech’s Dean’s List

Lauren Gregory, a 2015 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to the Dean’s List at Virginia Tech University for the Fall 2017 semester. In order to earn the recognition, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or better while taking a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Bonner lands on UVA’s Dean’s List

Sherese Bonner, a 2017 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to the Dean’s List at the University of Virginia for the Fall 2017 semester. In order to receive the honor, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher while taking at least 15 credit hours.

Editorial: More traffic is coming to New Kent via Interstate 64

Discussion and comments were received Tuesday night about the widening of Interstate 64 from exit 200 (Interstate 295) in Henrico to exit 205 (Bottoms Bridge) in New Kent. Even though I wasn’t there, I can say that the proposal may have good intentions, but it’s not going to solve the problems. When I receive alerts from Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) or Virginia State Police (VSP) about accidents in the area, the ones that occur along Interstate 64 in our area take place in New Kent County. Three New Kent locations part of Virginia’s Historic Garden week

Three New Kent locations will be showcased as part of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week in 2018. Cedar Lane Plantation, Moss Side Manor, and Cumberland Plantation will be open for tours on Saturday, Apr. 21, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at Cedar Lane Plantation at 10 a.m. New Kent residents may visit Cedar Lane Plantation at no charge from 9-10 a.m. A farmers’ market and historical civil war re-enactments will also take place. Events announced for Green vs. New Kent 50th anniversary

The Green vs. New Kent committee has announced plans for the 50th anniversary of the Charles C. Green. vs. County School Board of New Kent County, landmark case heard by the United States Supreme Court on May 27, 1968. The Green decision established the duty of school boards to eliminate all vestiges of state-imposed segregation and further placed an affirmative duty on school boards to integrate schools. The case is recognized as the most significant public school desegregation of the Supreme Court following Brown vs. Board of Education, changing the practice of school systems throughout the nation. Bates named to VCU’s Dean’s List

Karen Bates, a resident of Charles City, was named to the Dean’s List at Virginia Commonwealth University for the Fall 2017 semester. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or better, take at least 12 credit hours, and not receive anything below a “C” grade Bates is majoring in early childhood education and is scheduled to graduate this May.
