A Quinton man known to many as the “Number One New Kent High School fan” died Sept. 18. Jess Goodman Jr. was known to many for his contributions to New Kent High School’s athletics. As a 1953 graduate of the high school, he fell in love with athletics as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track. After serving two years in the U.S. Army in Japan and 30 years working at CSX Railroad as a brakeman, Jess returned to his home in New Kent. I commend the efforts of New Kent County and VCU Health System to work together to improve accessibility and availability of health care services for residents in eastern Planning District 15. This project will significantly improve access to outpatient CT services, as well as bringing other high-quality services provided by VCU Health System to the area. In addition to the benefits of having accessible imaging services for outpatients, a CT scanner in a necessity for a freestanding emergency department. April Wooten, a Yoga instructor at Active Life Fitness Center in New Kent, received the 2017 BOLD Award from MINDBODY, a technology platform for the wellness service industry. Wooten received the Inspirational Instructor/Professional Award, presented to the individual who inspires his or her clients in every aspect of their lives. She has cerebral palsy and is a certified yoga instructor. Wooten operates donation-based classes at her Home Grown Yoga Studio in Barhamsville.
When Al Lambiase moved to Lanexa 12 years ago, he searched for an organization that related to his background as a military veteran. Unable to find one, he pondered the idea of creating a group based out of New Kent. Now, Lambiase is looking to build on the former dream with local community support. Lambiase founded New Kent County Vets and Patriots in April of this year. Haley Holland, a senior at New Kent High School, has been recognized with the President’s Volunteer Gold Service Award. Haley completed more than 294 hours of volunteer service over a 12-month period through the Leadership for Service program of HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership.) The award recognizes volunteers who have contributed time and efforts to their community to make it a better place. Haley is the daughter of Michael and Ann Holland.
I guess you can call this a public service announcement, but more importantly, encouragement for you all to make a difference. In 2015 voters went to the polls to elect officials to represent respective counties on both governmental and school boards. Now it’s two years later; how are they doing? George Handler, a 2005 graduate of New Kent High School, was recently named as operations manager of Oil-Dri at its Ripley facility. He will oversee processing and packaging operations. George received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Military Institute and his M.B.A. from the University of Richmond. He recently worked as a senior staff engineer with Nestle-Purina.
Charles City will have an open door demonstration of its new voting machines that will be used in the upcoming general election. Residents can view the devices from Oct. 16-20, from 12-4 p.m at the Government and School Board Administration Building and again from Oct. 23-25 from 12-4 p.m. The devices are the new voting systems provided by ImageCast Evolution by Dominion Voting.
