Wayman named to Va. Tech Dean’s List

Brianne Wayman, a 2016 graduate of New Kent High School and Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School, was named to Virginia Tech’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2016 semester. Wayman is majoring in environmental policy and planning and minoring in economics. She is scheduled to graduate in Dec. 2017. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or better while taking at least 12 credit hours.

Black named to Dean’s List at Mary Baldwin University

Abigail Black, a resident of Charles City, earned Dean’s List Honors from Mary Baldwin University (formerly known as Mary Baldwin College) for the Fall 2016 semester. To be eligible for the Dean’s List at the university, a students must accumulate a grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.74 and be pursuing a degree in his or her respective studies.

Quimby earns high marks at High Point

Zacheriah Quimby, a native of Providence Forge, was named to High Point University’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2016 semester. Quimby, who graduated from New Kent High School in 2016, is majoring in middle grades education with an emphasis in English and History. In order to be named to university’s Dean’s List, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Coming here to the United States is not a right. It is a privilege that should be respected and honored. No one has a right to demand it. A country without defined, preserved, and defended borders is not a country. Every sovereign country has a right to determine who they will allow to come visit, stay or become a citizen. Richard earns Dean’s List honors at Old Dominion University

Sydney Richard, a Charles City native and valedictorian for the Class of 2016 at Charles City High School, was named to Old Dominion University’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2016 semester. She is currently studying at the university’s College of Sciences with a focus in biology. In order to be named to the Dean’s List at Old Dominion University, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or better while taking at least 12 credit hours during the semester.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. is partnering with Charles City High School’s PTA and Charles City’s Sheriff’s Office to host its 20th annual youth symposium on Mar. 10 at Charles City High School from 5-11 p.m. Entitled “Youth Investment: Building a Future for Impactful Leaders,” students will participate in various workshops on healthy choices, healthy living, healthy relationships, and healthy generations. The symposium aims to promote a positive atmosphere and enhance youth’s awareness on how to be well adjusted to current situations and for them to become productive citizens. Letter to the Editor: Positive street names can influence behavior

Suppose Interstate 64 in New Kent was named” Courtesy Highway”? An aggressive, mean road hog like me might not be so hellbent to rudely cut off other cars or pass them before getting in front of them and slowing down. I would be influenced, if only a little, by a road named after a quality or value that we all admire. What if one of our roads that are chronically littered with trash were renamed “Neatness Way?” Would vengeful vandals rip down the street signs and throw more rubbish than ever along the road?
