Automated speed cameras for Charles City school zone enforcement operational beginning Dec. 2

Charles City County Sheriff’s Office will begin its initial trial for using automated speed enforcement cameras in Charles City County Public School speed zones. Beginning Dec. 2, the warning period will begin, allowing drivers to have a one-month adjustment to get used to the changes in the area. Warning summonses will be sent to violators during that time frame. Live enforcement will begin on Jan. 6, with motorists who exceed the school zone speed limit by 10 or more miles per hour receiving a summons by mail. These summonses carry a fine of $100. Charles City County’s government is in crisis. The county quietly froze spending this summer before urgently borrowing $5 million in August to pay its bills. Lucy Vick, a resident of Quinton, was inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society at Christopher Newport University. To be eligible for induction, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher, and be in the top ten percent of the junior and senior class.

New Kent Sheriff’s Office wins HEAT award

New Kent Sheriff’s Office was the recipient of Virginia State Police’s Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program among localities that serves between 20,000 and 100,000 people. The award was presented to the organizations whose efforts reduce vehicle theft and the theft of vehicle parts.
