New Kent Winery to host half marathon

New Kent Winery is partnering with Sports Backers of Richmond to host its first half marathon. The announcement was made during a Jan. 17 kickoff event at the winery. Local students make W&M Dean’s List

Two students received recognition for making the Dean’s List at the College of William & Mary for the Fall 2016 semester. Erin O’Connell of Barhamsville and Jonah Sweeney of Providence Forge were acknowledged for their high academic achievements. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must earn a 3.6 Quality Point Average during the semester while taking at least 12 credit hours.

Susan Sexton of Quinton is pleased to announce the engagement of her daughter, Heather Sexton to Brandon Bowery, son of Jimmy and Sherry Bowery of Varina. Heather is a 2011 graduate of New Kent High School and a May 2016 cum laude graduate of VCU with a Bachelor of Science in Radiation Sciences. Heather is employed with VCU Health. A spring wedding is planned.

Local NK business awarded contract

CATLab, a New Kent business in the division of Control Automation Technologies Corporation (CATC), has been awarded a contract with Textron to provide testing and calibration services for its unmanned aircraft systems at the facility located in Blackstone. CatLab will perform services for laboratories that include calibration and other discipline. The work will assist military in upgrading unmanned aircraft for operations performed by the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

Two named to Bridgewater College’s Dean’s List

Two Quinton residents have received recognition from Bridgewater College for academic achievement. Albert FitzPatrick and Josiah Schlosser were both named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2016 semester. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must attain a 3.4 grade-point average or higher.

Evers graduates from VCU

Skylar Christian Evers, a 2012 graduate of New Kent High School, recently completed his studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Evers graduated Cum Laude on Dec. 10 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pre-Medicine with a minor in chemistry. He plans to pursue his childhood ambition of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Skylar is the son of Kathy Evers and Bruce Evers.

Grant awarded to help reestablish food pantry in Charles City

A grant made by the Dominion Foundation will be used to help reestablish the food pantry in Charles City. The Dominion Foundation has presented Quin Rivers Community Action Agency a $5,000 grant to assist with the purchase of food supplies and hiring of a staff member to run a permanent food pantry in Charles City.
