Charles City vineyard receives $250,000 grant

A Charles City vineyard received a $250,000 grant as part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s grants through the Value-Added Producer Grant program. The Virginia Rural Development office’s Oct. 27 press release announced that Upper Shirley Vineyards LLC was one of 20 recipients to receive money through the program. The vineyard received the quarter-million dollar grant to increase wine production, marketing, and inventory. “We have a strong history working with local producers and small rural businesses through the VAPG program and we continue to give the program careful attention each year because those who benefit are innovative leaders working…

Baylands Federal Credit Union opens in Quinton

Baylands Federal Credit Union has opened a branch in the Quinton area of New Kent County. Located at 2111 Pocahontas Trail, the community-chartered credit union lives by a motto and “believe in helping families live better lives.” The credit union has given back to schools, non-profit organizations, and local community events. It is also a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. Baylands FCU is insured by the National credit Union Administration and credit of the U.S. Government. American Red Cross offering smoke alarms

The American Red Cross, in partnership with Senior Connections, is offering smoke alarms to residents in Charles City and New Kent County. Currently the organization has installed 21 smoke alarms in the localities. The project is part of Fire Prevention Week to raise awareness. New Kent Stagehands present “Charlie Brown”

New Kent Stagehands will present “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” based on Charles Schultz comic strip over a two-week span in November. Featuring the antics and comedy of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and a cast of characters, audiences will watch as he takes on situations as only he can. The script and music is written by Clark Gesner. The show will take place at New Kent Middle School Nov. 11-12, and 18-19, 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 13, 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. For information, call 932-3450.
