I would like to reiterate that the responsibilities of the (Charles City) Board of Supervisors are to plan, develop and regulate growth, and to maintain current county operations and services. The (Charles City) School Board’s responsibilities are to establish programs and procedures that will produce the best educational opportunities for our students as well as to accomplish wise management of the resources available to the district. In order to achieve any form of success, these two boards must collaborate with each other as a well-oiled machine. When any member of either board publicly denounces the efforts of another, this becomes…

The New Kent School Board has changed its policy defining school bus drivers and some cafeteria workers as permanent part-time employees and they attribute it to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The facts are that the ACA does not require an employer to define someone as permanent part-time, nor does it require an employer to reduce premium assistance for medical insurance for employees that work less than 30 hours per week. I attended a New Kent School Board meeting with my neighbors, in solidarity with and to show support for our bus drivers. At issue was a proposal under consideration to “outsource” or have an outside private company take over our student transportation. Virginia Department of Education is projecting 730 for 2012-2013 and 700 or less by the 2013-2014 school year. If the schools continues on this down spiral, we are fast approaching the point where it might start making sense to consolidate all schools into one building (such as the middle/high). I believe you may have to think along these lines in the near future.” I now believe that time has come. The school board needs to combine all Charles…

Virginia’s “No burning law” goes into effect on Feb. 15, the start of spring fire season. The commonwealth’s law prohibits burning before 4 p.m. each day until April 30 if the fire is within 300 feet of woodland, brushland, or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials. “This law is one of the most effective tools we have to prevent wildfires,” said John Miller, director of resource protection at the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF). “Each late winter and early spring, downed trees, branches and leaves become ‘forest fuels’ that increase the danger of a forest fire. “By adhering…
