“She is Miss New Kent.” Those words were spoken by New Kent District 4 Supervisor Ron Stiers during Tuesday morning’s highway dedication ceremony in honor of the late Patricia Paige. Paige was an advocate and leader for her New Kent community. Growing up in the county, her characteristic nature of keeping the world a beautiful place guided her to run for New Kent County’s Board of Supervisors. She eventually was elected and served as the first African-American woman to hold the position of chair. Benjamin Harrison Bridge undergoing five months of maintenance starting Apr. 22

The Benjamin Harrison Bridge that connects Charles City and Prince George County will be undergoing maintenance for the next five months. Starting Monday, Apr. 22, Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be working to replace span locks on the bridge. Work will be completed on intermittent days. Maintenance will take place Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. During this time, flaggers will direct traffic to alternating lifts. During some times, delays will also take place for periodic bridge lifts that will last no longer than 20 minutes. Motorists are advised to pay attention to changes in traffic patterns. Motorists…

A love for horse-riding has provided gateways for a New Kent teenager in the equestrian world. Faith Hynes fell in love with horses nearly 10 years ago as a seven-year old. Now at the age of 17, she navigates her passion for them around her academic schedule. Hynes spends roughly six to eight hours a day at Fox Pointe Farm, owned by Colleen Seely. Litter clean-up program created to divert Charles City offenders

Charles City Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with Charles City Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has announced the creation of the voluntary litter reduction program in the criminal justice system. The offices petitioned Charles City County’s Circuit Court for the creation after several planning sessions. The petition was signed by Judge B. Elliott Bondurant on Friday, Mar. 22. The program has been created to address mass amounts of litter on Charles City roadways. The program will be used as a potential diversion program for various misdemeanor criminal offenses, particularly with youthful offenders.
