We hear daily of humans killing other humans. We didn’t ask to be born, but once we’re here, we discover opportunities to make life worth living. To cut off a person’s chance to avail themselves of what life has to offer strikes me as grossly heinous. To be insensitive to this and wipe out another person’s life, even unintentionally, is what I never want to do. Guns don’t need to be sold, dispensed, or brandished indiscriminately. Several local residents completed their studies at James Madison University and were recognized during Spring 2022 commencement ceremonies. Marisa Turner of New Kent graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre. Other graduates include Krystle Jones of Charles City (bachelor’s degree in biology), Shayla Forrest (bachelor’s degree in English) and Laura Aday Rodriguez (general psychology), both of Providence Forge, and Izea Turner (bachelor’s degree in economics), David McKenney (bachelor’s degree in health sciences), Elizabeth Miller (bachelor’s degree in health sciences), and Laura Eaton (master of education degree in adult education/human resources), all of Quinton.
Joseph DuVal, a soon to be graduate of New Kent High School, is the first student to complete the school’s study abroad program. DuVal completed his 2021-22 school year through a total immersion program in Seville, Spain. During his studies, he lived with a local Spanish family, attended local high school classes, and completed online course work through New Kent High School. DuVal received assistance from New Kent High School guidance counselor Elizabeth Ahlfield to make the experience possible.
Charles City County has had many great years of volunteer service from firefighters and emergency medical transport teams. However, with time, change must come. That change took another step on the evening of May 25. James “Jimmy” Johnson was pinned as the first chief of Charles City County Fire and EMS during the Wednesday afternoon service. Ryan Jones, a resident of Quinton, was awarded the General Douglas MacArthur Cadet Leadership Award and Superior Cadet IV. Jones was one of 100 cadets at the University of North Georgia that was presented with an award during Spring ceremonies.
Kathryn Felts, a native of New Kent, graduated from Carson-Newman University as part of Spring 2022 commencement ceremonies. Felts earned a Master of Science in Nursing. She plans to become a family nurse practitioner.
Three local students earned Dean’s List accolades from Radford University during the Spring 2022 semester. Kirstern Torrence and William Bowery, both of Quinton, and Alliyah James, of Charles City, were recognized for their academic achievements. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must accumulated a grade-point average of 3.4 while taking at least 12 semester hours.
