Jack Daniels, a 2019 graduate of New Kent High School, graduated from Virginia Tech with honors on May 14. Daniels earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in disability studies.
Lance Barneschristian, a native of New Kent, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the Army National Guard on Mar. 11. Barneschristian is assigned to the 1156th Engineer Company in New York. His promotion is based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and developmental potential.
Erin Highsmith, a native of Quinton, was initiated into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society at Virginia Wesleyan University this past April. Students initiated into the organization must be at least sophomores in college, rank in the top 35 percent of their class, and demonstrate leadership experiences based off one of the five pillars of collaboration, inclusivity, integrity, scholarship, and service.
Cecilia Garner, a native of New Kent, was named to the Gold Key Honor Society at Walden University. Membership into the society is based on academic performance and by invitation only to the top 15 percent of top-performing graduate and doctoral students. Students must also have a grade-point average of 4.0. Garner is also a member of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society and National Society of Leadership and Success.
The annual Civil War reenactment at Fort Pocahontas will take place on June 4-5 in Charles City. Celebrating the 158th anniversary of the Action of Wilson’s Wharf, the grounds will have live history and battle reenactments from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on June 4 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on June 5, located at 13150 Sturgeon Point Road, Charles City. Other activities planned include self-guided tours of the fort and camps and selling of reproductions of Civil War-era merchandise and clothing. Cost is $10/adult and $8/per student with discounts for groups of ten or more.
