Kendal Vorous, a resident of New Kent, has been accepted into the Peace Corps. A graduate from the College of William and Mary with a degree in psychology, Vorous will begin her tenure on July 12 in Costa Rica where she will begin training as a youth development facilitator.

Two local students were named to the Dean’s List at the University of Maryland Global Campus for the Spring 2025 semester. Tenisha High-Adams of Providence Forge and Jennifer Hilton of New Kent were recognized for their academic accolades at the university. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must be taking at least six credits in coursework and accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Carrington Coyle, a resident of Providence Forge, was named to the Dean’s List at East Carolina University for the Spring 2025 semester. To be recognized for the achievement, a student must be enrolled full-time and accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Two local students graduated from the College of William and Mary as part of Spring 2025 commencement ceremonies. Jackson Henning of New Kent graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the college, and Kendral Vorous graduated with a Bachelor of Science.
Taryn Bonsky, a resident of New Kent, recently completed her studies at York College of Pennsylvania. Bonsky graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree as part of May 2025 commencement ceremonies.
Four months after the state deadline, the audit of Charles City’s finances was finally completed. The audit reported material “weaknesses in internal controls,” resulting in a “reasonable possibility that a material misstatement of the entity’s financial statements will not be prevented or detected.” The last delay was a $231,341 cash discrepancy, which the auditor never could sort out. While the county’s dismal record-keeping casts all figures into doubt, the audit indicates that Charles City spent $30.2 million in 2024 on a budget of $24 million, which is 25 percent over budget. Jordan Stewart, New Kent’s Board of Supervisors District 5 representative, has been elected as the new chairwoman for PlanRVA. Formerly known as the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, PlanRVA encompasses nine localities and acts as a planning agency and provider of essential services to the region. The organization works to convene community representatives and build relationships that strengthen capacity across the region. “I’m looking forward to serving both my community and the region in this new role and am anticipating a great year ahead,” Stewart said in a press release.
