Three local residents recently completed their studies at Shenandoah University. Rebecca Bradford of Quinton, Lindsey Davis of Barhamsville, and Nicole Beshai of Providence Forge were recognized during the annual May commencement ceremony. The ceremony recognized students who completed studies during Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021.
New Kent County’s Fair Association has announced the return of the annual fair in a one-day activity that will take place this upcoming October. The fair is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct. 9, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at New Kent Middle School. Attractions at the events include inflatable rides, home and garden exhibits, vendors, music, and the Miss New Kent County Fair Pageant. Spots for vendors are still available for the event. Bryan Brooks, a resident of New Kent, recently was recognized for making the Dean’s List at St. Mary’s College of Maryland for the Spring 2021 semester. In order to be recognized for the accolade, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better while taking 12 or more credit hours. Brooks was also named to the St. Mary’s Scholar’s list.
Thrive Virginia, which serves New Kent and Charles City County, has announced Gillian Barney as its new executive director. Barney has worked with the agency since 2015, with the most recent being the interim acting executive director. She has 24 years of experience in the nonprofit sector with an extensive background in grant management in compliance. Barney will focus on refining and implementing the agency’s strategic plan, which includes its core mission to collaborate with community-based partners to create pathways to self-sufficiency for individuals and families.
I was very impressed by what I saw at Charles City County’s July 4th celebration at Harrison Park. It reminded me of the old days when everyone would get together with family and friends, which included good food and great fun. The county takes a lot of criticism. However, things like this are only steps to a better tomorrow. The county will grow into something special. New Kent Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) has awarded its annual scholarship to New Kent High School Class of 2021 graduate Christian Jones. Jones was chosen by the organization’s motto of enhancing areas of community development and empowerment through numerous initiatives. Christian will utilize the $250 scholarship grant as he pursues his degree in photography at Virginia Wesleyan University.
