Erica Larochelle, a rising junior at New Kent High School, will join the staff of the New Kent-Charles City Chronicle as a summer intern. Larochelle is a member of the cheerleading squad, YADAPP, and the school’s choir. Heritage Public Library held a hybrid community meeting on June 30 to discuss methods to get preschoolers, students, and adults interested in science. The session, entitled “Spark Science Exploration,” consisted of nine community members and five library staff members providing dialogue and conversation on the topic. I want to recognize the New Kent community for always supporting their sports programs, no matter what. I have been covering sports for the Chronicle for the last four years. The diversity in sports can be attributed to New Kent, not just basketball and football. You have tennis, golf, baseball, softball, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling. A portion of Barnetts Road (Route 609) in Charles City County will close next week for pipe replacement (weather permitting). Barnetts Road will close between Wayside Road (Route 607) and West Run Road (Route 625) beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6. The road is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Friday, July 9, 4 p.m. Motorists will be navigated along a 7.3-mile detour. Drivers traveling southbound will take Wayside Road to Kimages Road (Route 658) and travel along that road to return to West Run Road. Charles City County educators and community leaders met on June 17 to identify resources to support students as a community of readers. Charles City High School English Teacher Lakishia Bannister led the discussion with the topic of “Reading is Knowledge,” pushing parents to promote model reading by choosing selections the child would like. Kara Canaday, VTEC Tribal Liaison, promoted the importance of book availability and providing books for the child at home. Adam Cable, of native of Quinton, was named to the Dean’s List at Frostburg State University for the Spring 2021 semester. In order to be recognized for the accolade, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.4 while taking at least 12 credit hours of courses.
Three local students were named to the Dean’s List at Shenandoah University for the Spring 2021 semester. Michael Amadeo of Quinton, Lindsey Davis of Barhamsville, and James Brooks of New Kent were all recognized for their academic achievements. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while taking at least 12 semester hours.
Quinton resident Zachary Wells was named to the Honor Roll at Bethel University for the Spring 2021 semester. In order to make the Honor Roll, a student must have accumulated a grade-point average of 3.7 of higher while taking at least 12 or more academic work hours.
