Bike race hit-and-run truck driver indicted in CC Court
A Virginia Beach truck driver has been identified and charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor reckless driving resulting in injury to two bicyclists during a May 11 road race.
Carlton Percell Crawford, 52, of 2107 Pier Point Place, received the indictments at Charles City Circuit Court during Tuesday morning proceedings.
According to a police report, shortly after 11:30 a.m. on May 11, state police responded to the hit and run motor vehicle crash on Route 106, approximately one mile south of Old Union Road.
Investigators said the crash occurred when Crawford, the alleged driver of the tractor-trailer was traveling northbound, attempted to pass a group of four bicyclists that were also traveling northbound. As the tractor-trailer driver crossed over the double solid line and into the southbound travel lane to pass, the driver swerved back into his lane to avoid striking a Ford F-150 pick-up truck head-on.
The tractor-trailer rig struck two of the bicyclists. The driver of the Ford F-150, who was traveling southbound, ran off the right side of the roadway to avoid being struck by the tractor-trailer.
The two adult male bicyclists, who were wearing safety helmets, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and were flown by med-flight helicopter to VCU Medical Center. One of the bicyclists remains in the medical facility. The driver of the Ford was not injured. The tractor-trailer did not stop at the scene.
