CCSO warns of computer scam

Charles City Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a potential computer scam that may lead to credit card and other important information stolen.

According to a released report from the office, a person will call and inform you that your computer is leaking pertinent information onto the internet and advise they were going to fix it. The individuals will proceed to tell you to open a port on your computer so they could remotely access your computer to fix the problem.

Once the port is open, they continue by saying there will be a small fee for fixing your computer. If you refuse to pay the fee, they will lock your computer so you are unable to access it until you give them a credit card number. Once you give them the credit card number to pay the fee they will charge an outrageous amount to your credit card.

This is an ongoing scam. If you fall prey to these people, they will have access to any pertinent information you have on your computer.

If you become a victim, the sheriff’s office advises citizens to disconnect your computer from the internet access and contact the appropriate credit card company.

If you know of anybody who is a victim or have any information relative to the scam, please call Charles City Sheriff’s Office at 829-9265.

NKHS student collapses on bus

A New Kent High School student, identified only as a sophomore girl, collapsed Tuesday afternoon after boarding a school bus at the school.

According to a source close to the matter, the girl became unresponsive after collapsing. A school resource officer administered CPR and a portable defibrillator (AED) was utilized until paramedics arrived on scene. The girl reportedly was stabilized and breathing on her own before being transported by medical evacuation helicopter to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.

In a press release issued Wednesday morning, New Kent school superintendent Rick Richardson said he is withholding comments and details at this time.

“Our New Kent school community is again confronted with a test of our commitment, determination, and strength having not yet recovered from the events of early October when we lost one of our cherished students,” he said. “Once again, however, our community and several key agencies have responded immediately and performed remarkably under the most extreme pressures imaginable. Let me first acknowledge the heroic efforts of the New Kent Sheriff’s Department under the leadership of Sheriff Wakie Howard and his deputies, as well as [Fire] Chief Rick Opett and his New Kent Fire & Rescue Department staff.

“I would like to specifically acknowledge three New Kent heroes whose efforts yesterday were both providential and miraculous; our bus driver, Tansle Ferrell, our Director of Transportation, Stephen King, and our New Kent High School Resource Officer Corporal Heath Jenkins. Our entire community and one family in particular, are forever indebted to these extraordinary individuals.

“On behalf of the New Kent School Board and school community, I want to extend our prayers and full support to our student and family during this critical time. As is always the case in New Kent, this community will come together to support you in every way possible,” concluded the superintendent’s statement.
