Jacob Vick scholarship established

In conjunction with the New Kent Educational Foundation (NKEF), the Jacob Aulman Vick Student-Athlete scholarship has been established for New Kent High School seniors.

The scholarship is being administered through NKEF in memory of Vick, a student-athlete who collapsed on Oct. 29 on the football practice field and later died.

Contributions and donations are now being accepted for the scholarship. If you would like to make a contribution, make your check payable to NKEF in care of the Jacob Vick Scholarship Fund. Checks may be sent to NKEF, P.O. Box 110, New Kent, VA, 23124.

Several arrested in NK crimes

New Kent Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested several individuals in relation to alleged crimes in December.

–Joseph Anthony Martinez, 32, of the 7800 block of North Henpeck Road, Quinton, was arrested on one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. On Dec. 16, Martinez allegedly took a 1994 Chevrolet van without the owner’s permission. After a warrant was issued, he was arrested after he returned the van to the owner and taken to Henrico Jail East and held on a $1,000 secured bond.

— David Luther Holley Jr., 41, of the 8300 block of New Kent Highway, New Kent, and Edward Wayne Shumate Sr., 42, of the 8400 block of North Henpeck Road, Quinton, were both arrested on one charge each of grand larceny. According to the arrest report, Holley and Shumate allegedly stole an outside air conditioning unit on Oct. 6 from a residence that was being renovated. A New Kent deputy was able to recover the unit at a local scrap yard. The duo was later arrested and each was held on a $1,000 secured bond.
Holley also was arrested for an additional grand larceny charge where he allegedly stole copper and gas powered tools from property being renovated on Dec. 5. The items were later recovered at a local pawn shop.

–Christopher Michael Walls, 28, and Jesse Ray Edwards, 22, both of the 1300 block of Waterside Drive, Lanexa, have been arrested on separate charges in relation to an altercation. Walls has been charged with one count of malicious wounding, while Edwards is charged with one count of assault and battery.

According to the police report, New Kent deputies responded to a Dec. 29 call of a fight at a residence on Waterside Drive. Upon arrival, deputies located Edwards, who had sustained several injuries to the face and was taken to a local hospital. Deputies later identified Walls as the other alleged party involved in the altercation and arrested him. After speaking to a magistrate, Walls was able to obtain a warrant for the arrest of Edwards for allegedly initiating the fight. Edwards was arrested and both parties were being held on a $1,000 secured bond.

–Courtney Lee Stephenson, 26, of the 1100 block of Stewart Drive, Williamsburg, and Emily Marie Bowles, 22, of the 900 block of Foley Drive, Williamsburg, were arrested on one charge each of possession of a controlled substance (heroin), possession of drug paraphernalia, and shoplifting. On Dec. 24, management at the Providence Forge Food Lion observed two women acting suspiciously in the store. After calling authorities, deputies arrived at the scene and spoke to Stephenson and Bowles, the alleged suspects. After an investigation, a New Kent deputy determined that the two suspects allegedly shoplifted items from the store. After a search, heroin was found on the suspects and they were taken into custody and remain in Henrico Jail East.

NKSO seeks information on break-ins

New Kent Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on break-ins at two businesses on Pocahontas Trail on Dec. 24-25.

According to a sheriff’s report, deputies arrived at the two businesses in the 1700 block of Pocahontas Trail where a burglary was reported. Upon arrival, deputies noticed an entry point where suspect(s) had entered and several items were removed from the premises.
