Benjamin Harrison Bridge to have multiple closures until November
The Benjamin Harrison Bridge that connects Charles City and Prince George counties will be closed for four day periods beginning July 21 to November 2014 for bridge improvement projects.
Crews will replace the 47-year old bridge’s auxiliary drive that raises and lowers the span, as well as make preventive maintenance repairs to the superstructure. Repairs will also address deck patching and beam replacement.
The first closure is scheduled for July 21, 7 a.m. to July 25, 7 a.m. A second closure is set to begin Aug. 4, 7 a.m. and end Aug. 8, 7 a.m. Two additional closures will be announced as well. Once the auxiliary drive replacement is complete, single-lane closures are expected on the bridge until mid-2015, according to bridge engineer Gary Martin.
Motorists are advised to take Route 5 westbound from Charles City to Interstate 295 southbound as an alternative route. Drivers may exit onto Route 10 eastbound (exit 13A) to return to Prince George. Travelers may also use the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry in James City County as another route.
