NKSO issues warning of individuals acting as social service workers

By Community Member | October 29, 2014 5:25 pm

New Kent Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning for county citizens to be on the lookout for individuals portraying themselves as employees of New Kent Department of Social Services. Recently, individuals have visited homes in and outside of the county, indicating they were employees of the department of social services and inspecting the homes.

New Kent Sheriff’s Office has investigated calls and conducted an investigation and identified these people are not employees of, nor appear to have any connection to the county’s department of social services. The sheriff’s office is recommending that if someone approaches you claiming to be from the department to follow these steps:

1. Ask that the individual produce an agency photo identification.

2. Verify that the individual is in a county vehicle. The vehicle will bear the county seal on the side, front door, and have local government license plates.

3. If you are still uncomfortable with the individual, you can verify their information by calling New Kent Department of Social Service during business hours by calling 966-1853.

4. As in any case where you have concerns about something of this nature, contact the sheriff’s office non-emergency number at 966-9500.

The sheriff’s office adds to not allow anyone in your home until you have positively identified the individual(s). Also, do not provide any information without being certain that they are in fact an authorized individual, as personal information can be used for identity fraud.

If you have been a victim of this scheme or have encountered these individuals, please contact New Kent Sheriff’s Office at 966-9500.
