High speed chase in New Kent leads to Amherst man’s arrest

An Amherst County man has turned himself in as a result of a high speed chase on Jan. 2 that spanned New Kent and Henrico County. Carl B. Viar, 25, surrendered to Virginia State Police on Jan. 3 without incident.

According to the police report, a Virginia State Trooper pulled over a 2006 Ford truck on Interstate 64 at mile marker 217 in New Kent for speeding 100 miles per hour in a posted 70 miles per hour zone. During the traffic stop, the truck took off, causing minor injury to a New Kent deputy assisting with the stop. The pursuit continued with the alleged suspect taking off on foot. Viar turned himself in the following day in relation to the incident.

Viar has been charged with the several felonies as a result of the stop. The felonies include eluding police, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Misdemeanor charges include reckless driving, driving outside of restrictions, obstruction of justice, trespassing, possession of marijuana, making an unsafe lane change, failing to stop at a stop sign, failing to stop at a traffic light, failing to use a turn signal, failing to wear a seatbelt, and driving on a sidewalk/bike path.

Virginia State Police were assisted in the pursuit by Henrico County police and New Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

Viar was being held in Henrico Jail East without bond.
