CUP for motorcycle race, PUD amendment approved by NK supervisors

New Kent supervisors approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for Colonial Downs to host a motorcycle race and an amendment to a Planned Use Development (PUD) permit for Patriot’s Landing Management Corporation during its Jan. 12 regular meeting. Supervisors granted both the permit and the amendment unanimously after no one elected to speak during the public hearings.

New Kent’s Planning Commission voted for a favorable recommendation for Colonial Downs’ CUP during its Dec. 15 meeting. The CUP allows Colonial Downs to host motorcycle racing at the facility for a third consecutive year. This year’s event is tentatively scheduled to be held on May 16, 1-8 p.m.

The PUD amendment for Patriot’s Landing Management Corporation will identify all roads in Phase II of the Patriot’s Landing development as private roads. The amendment was needed to address liability concerns over a nearby lake’s dam in the subdivision. An agreement was reached by Patriot’s Landing Management Corporation and Patriot’s Landing Homeowners’ Association to establish a reserve fund for roadway and dam replacement in case of the structure’s failure. Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) elected not to deal with the roadway because it runs over the dam.

In one final matter, county attorney Michele Gowdy announced New Kent’s DMV Select will now become a permanent fixture in the county.

After a six-month trial, it was determined that the county’s DMV had sufficient business to be hosted by the county. Currently, the DMV Select is located in the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office and conducts transactions that include issuing vehicle titles, registrations, license plates, permits, disabled parking placards, transcripts, and voter registration. Supervisors voted unanimously to enter into an agreement to make the designation official.
