Icy conditions remain on some road surfaces Friday morning in New Kent and Charles City counties as a result of temperatures that dropped well below freezing overnight.

New Kent Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joe McLaughlin reports that since yesterday afternoon when a single vehicle accident with injuries occurred there have been six other crashes in the county but none resulted in injuries requiring medical transport to a hospital.

Yesterday’s accident east of Barhamsville on Tabernacle Road near the intersection with Holly Forks Road in the county’s eastern end sent two people to a Williamsburg hospital.

“The majority of the roadways have been addressed by VDOT, however there is a need for concern regarding icy conditions as water refreezes on the roadway and/or snow blows onto the road surfaces from trees or open fields,” McLaughlin said in an e-mail. “Continue to be cautious of low hanging trees, snow drifting onto the road, and icy patches on the roadways.”

Last night, the National Weather Service reported snowfall totals of seven inches in Providence Forge, Quinton, and Lanexa along with six inches at Crump’s Mill in New Kent. Barhamsville, meanwhile, received the most in New Kent, topping out at eight inches.

According to the NWS report, Charles City received seven inches.
