UPDATE: No additional weather-related crashes in New Kent; accident totals climb in Richmond region, state
Area motorists apparently heeded warnings to stay off local roads or use caution since no weather-related accidents were reported overnight in New Kent County. But the same cannot be said for the Richmond region and state (new statistics appear below).
“There were one or two accidents [overnight], but they were not weather-related,” said New Kent Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joe McLaughlin.
Icy roads contributed to 13 vehicle crashes in the county during a seven-hour period from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday.
McLaughlin said none of the accidents resulted in injuries requiring medical transport. Most involved vehicles sliding into ditches.
Five of the accidents occurred on Interstate 64 while three were reported on Route 60. Two each took place on both Route 249 (New Kent Highway) and Route 612 (Tunstall Road) while one occurred on Route 627 (South Waterside Drive).
In updated numbers as of 6 a.m. today (Friday) from state police, Sgt. Steve Vick reports 322 crashes have occurred in the Richmond Metro region. Most (304) involved damage to vehicles, but luckily only 14 people sustained injury. Troopers assisted motorists in 125 disabled vehicles. Overall, there were 520 calls for service from 12 noon on Thursday to 6 a.m. today (Friday).
Statewide, Vick said, state police have responded to 2,964 calls for service due to the winter storm.
