Charles City schools announce hirings as part of restructuring for FY2015-16

As part of Charles City Public Schools FY2015-16 adopted budget, superintendent of schools David Gaston has announced the hiring of positions as part of the school board’s reorganization and restructuring plan effective July 1.

Wendy Cauley has been named as Director for Teaching, Learning, and Accountability for the school division. She will be responsible for focusing on curriculum, assessment, and accountability measures for the school system. She has previously worked for Williamsburg-James City County and has 14 years of teaching experience.

Tina Smith has been named as Director of Student Services and Federal Programs. Smith has worked in Charles City’s school system since 1991 and is a native of the county. Her responsibilities include being the division leader for all special education programs, as well as student conduct, student support services, and federal grant programs.

Lynda Byrd-Poller will assume the role as Director for Human Resources, Strategic Planning, and Professional Learning for Charles City Public Schools. Byrd-Poller comes from York County where she ha been serving as associate director for transformative learning. Her responsibilities in Charles City will include managing school division employment and recruitment, benefits, salary administration and compensation, performance management, certification and licensure of teaching and other staff, and policy development.

Jerome Tyler Jr. has been named as Supervisor for Operations in the school system. Tyler is a Charles City native and has worked in the Charles City school system since 1999 as a math teacher, assistant principal, and director of transportation. Tyler’s responsibilities will be to oversee the planning and implementation of the five-year Capital Improvement Plan and work with county administration as the school division and county to find efficiencies through joint services as recommended by the DECIDESMART committee.

Susan Salg will assume the role as Director of Finance for Charles City Public Schools. Salg has worked as a senior staff accountant and senior vice president of planning and director of budgeting with accounting firms in the private sector. She also has worked with King & Queen and Lancaster counties as their school’s director of budget and finance. She will be responsible for all budgeting, financing, purchasing, and business affairs for the school system.

“I am excited to work with these individuals in their new roles in our organization,” said Gaston in a press release. “They bring a depth of diversity of experience to the table that will serve our teachers, students, and community well in years ahead.”
