Two men involved in separate cases accepted plea deals as part of July 27 morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.

–Nicholas Warren Bryant, 20, of the 200 block of Buckroe Road, Hampton, entered a guilty plea to one count of obtaining money by false pretenses. One charge of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretenses was dropped. In a summary of evidence, on Dec. 13, 2014, Bryant and Shalia Marie Brown, a co-defendant, went to Gold and Silver Mine in Quinton and pawned stolen jewelry, receiving $3,000 from the transaction. A subsequent investigation led to Bryant’s arrest. Under the agreement, he received a 10-year jail sentence with all but two years suspended. He must also pay $3,000 in restitution. Brown pled guilty in a trial on June 9.

–Mark Avery Sheppard Jr., 28, of the 7600 block of North Chesterfield, accepted a plea deal to one amended charge of misdemeanor petty larceny (originally credit card larceny). In a summary of evidence, on Aug. 4, 2014, Shepherd was one of the movers who helped Roscoe and Kimberly Harris move into their new home. The couple realized that unauthorized transactions on a debit card had been made on an account, and later discovered two Samsung tablets missing. An investigation revealed that Sheppard was one of the parties involved with the theft. As part of the plea agreement, he received a 12-month jail sentence with all time suspended upon the condition that he repays $390 in restitution before the end of the year.
