New Kent school board members unanimously agreed to enter into a contract with Tennis Courts Inc. for the construction of a tennis court facility for the high school.

After a March outcry from citizens about the conditions of the courts that prevented any home matches for the high school team, school board members looked to resolve the problem through discussions that included cost and moving the courts. In July, talks resulted in approving the relocation of the tennis courts to the front of the high school. At the Sept. 10 board meeting, school board members favored entering a contract with $305,226 with Tennis Courts Incorporated.

Superintendent of schools Dave Myers said the aforementioned figure and vote were for the stand-alone construction for the courts themselves. Additional fees for permits and a contingency fund will bring the total cost close to $345,000 according to the superintendent.

With the approval of the contract by school board members, the matter heads to county supervisors for final approval of funding.
