New Kent Sheriff’s Office is advising county residents of a possible scam that is making its way through the area.

According to the press release, residents contacted the sheriff’s office about asphalt contractors going door-to-door to ask residents if they are interested in having their driveway paved. The contractors say they are selling de-milled asphalt and quote a price to homeowners for the complete job. They continue by getting into more information about the job and say if any additional work is required then prices would increase.

New Kent Sheriff’s Office says the following steps should be taken prior to allowing a contractor to start the job.

–Check for proper licensing.

–Check for county business permit.

–Check for proper insurance, both liability and workman compensation.

–Check references.

–Get a copy of the contract and make sure it includes the following: Contractor’s name, address, contact numbers, license/permit number, details of the job, full price, warranty (if any), satisfaction clause (if applicable), and signature of company representative.

The sheriff’s office is advising caution be used when dealing with contractors on your property without you making prior contact. If you have questions, contact the State Corporation Commission or the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation at 367-8511. You may also contact New Kent Sheriff’s Office at 966-9500.
