Ever since the awarding of a $600,000 grant for a high-speed broadband initiative, Charles City constituents have asked the question of when internet access will be available to their homes and throughout the county. New Kent Sheriff’s Office personnel have arrested a Charles City teenager on drug possession after responding to a disturbance. Colton J. Dearborn, 19, was taken into custody by New Kent deputies on Oct. 22. According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a residence at the 2600 block of New Kent Highway on a disturbance incident. Dearborn, who was identified as one of the subjects involved, is alleged to have possessed cocaine and heroin. He was arrested on two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Dearborn was taken to Henrico Jail East and was being held on $1,000 bond.
With nearly every candidate in attendance, approximately 150 citizens converged on Charles City High School’s auditorium for an Oct. 23 forum sponsored by Charles City’s branch of the NAACP. Twenty-three individuals vying for votes addressed the audience during the two-hour Friday night forum. Headlining the event was a four-way race for county sheriff. A Charles City man was killed in a car crash in the county during the early morning hours of Oct. 20. Tracy Turpin, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Charles City Road. Turpin graduated from Charles City High School in 2012.
After two years of development and planning, the Love’s Company presented its proposed plan for a travel stop off of Emmaus Church Road (Route 106) in New Kent to the county’s planning commission Monday night. The hour long presentation came before the planners to provide first insight of a Love’s Travel Stop just off the Exit 211 interchange from Interstate 64. A Hampton woman who used her sister’s identification at a traffic stop has entered Alford pleas of guilt (stipulating while she maintains her innocence, evidence presented would be enough to convict her) as part of a plea deal during afternoon proceedings on Monday in New Kent Circuit Court. Laura Lee Carter, 33, of 17 Woodsman Road, entered guilty pleas to one count each of forgery of a public document, false identification (second offense), perjury, misdemeanor reckless driving, and misdemeanor driving suspended. A Georgia man has been charged by New Kent Sheriff’s Office for using stolen credit cards to make cigarette purchases in Quinton. Joseph M. Davis, 32, of Augusta, Georgia, was arrested on eight counts of credit card fraud stemming from alleged illegal activities conducted on Oct. 9. According to the police report, New Kent Sheriff’s Office worked jointly with Henrico County Police to investigate a rash of stolen credit cards. A New Kent woman was killed in a two-car vehicle Saturday afternoon in King William. Wanda M. Brown, 53, died at a local hospital from injuries sustained in the Oct. 17 accident. According to the police report, shortly before 3:30 p.m., a 2010 Toyota Camry was traveling west on Route 360 (Richmond-Tappahannock Turnpike) near Route 30 (King William Road) when it struck a 2006 Nissan Altima in the rear.
