Man receives year in alternative programs after eluding police on motorcycle
A Richmond man who fled police in a multi-county chase received formal sentencing in Feb. 22 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings.
Nicholas Joseph Ciambor, 30, of the 5800 block of Westover Village Drive, will serve one year in the men’s Detention and Diversion Center programs. Ciambor entered Alford pleas of guilty (stipulating he maintains his innocence with his plea but evidence presented would convict him of the crime) to one count each of felony eluding police, misdemeanor reckless driving, and misdemeanor driving without a proper endorsement during a Dec. 21 trial.
During the original trial, a summary of events indicated last July 18, a be-on-the-lookout was issued for an orange motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Interstate 64 around 1 p.m. The vehicle was located near mile marker 224, entering James City County. The vehicle exited at mile marker 227, turned around and returned to the interstate in the westbound direction. A short pursuit ensued before police elected to terminate as a safety precaution for other motorists.
About five minutes later, a Virginia state trooper pulled into the Circle K gas station on Route 33 (Eltham Road) and noticed a motorcycle fitting the description of the suspect was parked in an access way with a person sitting on it. When the trooper activated emergency equipment, the vehicle took off. The vehicle sped east on Route 33 to Route 249 (New Kent Highway) where it turned left before making a quick right onto Angel View Road.
The motorcycle traveled into the parking lot of Angel View Church and drove through the church’s cemetery. As the vehicle slowed and attempted to reenter the roadway, a bystander was able to grab the driver and pull him off the bike. The trooper, now on scene, raced over and arrested the driver, who was identified as Ciambor.
Ciambor received five years in jail with four years, six months suspended on the felony eluding police charge (six months to serve). On each of the misdemeanor charges, he was handed a term of 12 months to serve with all but three months suspended (active time of six months). The defendant will serve the total year of time in the Detention and Diversion Program.
In another circuit court matter, a Quinton man will serve a year in jail as the result of stealing a check.
Kevin Lee McKenney 37, of the 5800 block of Spring Run Drive, received a 10-year jail sentence with all but nine years suspended (one to serve) on one count of larceny of a check. A summary of evidence presented revealed that McKenney stole a check belonging to Kenneth Ray Valentino Jr. on Feb. 24, 2015. The defendant will serve his year with an emphasis on placing him into a drug rehabilitation program.
