A Hopewell man has been arrested after leading a state trooper on a high speed chase that started in Charles City during the early morning hours on Sept. 23.

Tommie M. Vanderhoff, 22, has been charged with one count each of felony eluding police, reckless driving, driving while revoked (fourth offense), improper registration, driving without insurance, driving without state inspection, driving without a motorcycle license, and improper passing.

In a press release from Sgt. Stephan Vick of the Virginia State Police, a motorcycle passed Trooper Jonathan Miles shortly before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) and Carters Mill Road. The trooper clocked the vehicle traveling 108 miles per hour in a posted 55 miles per hour zone. Emergency equipment was activated by the trooper, but the vehicle did not stop.

A chase began with the motorcycle exiting onto Interstate 295 northbound in Varina. Other state troopers joined the pursuit as the motorcycle continued towards the Glenside Drive exit where it crashed when trying to exit the interstate. After the wreck, the driver took off on foot before being later apprehended without incident.

Vanderhoff was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. After his release, authorities will transport him to Henrico Jail West.
