Sentences of probation given to defendants in Charles City Circuit Court
Two individuals from Charles City received sentences of probation in unrelated cases as part of Feb. 3 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court.
Ebony Monique Coles, 25, of the 12000 block of The Glebe Lane, had all time suspended on charges of breaking and entering (20 years), misdemeanor assault and battery (12 months), and misdemeanor destruction of property (12 months) during her formal sentencing.
During a Nov. 1 bench trial, Judge B. Elliott Bondurant convicted Coles on the aforementioned charges. At that trial, evidence presented by Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler showed that Coles broke into the home of Jermaine Woodley on Feb. 7, 2016. Woodley, who is the father of Coles’ child, said at the trial that she burst into the house without permission during the early morning hours and would not leave. A physical altercation occurred and Woodley along with his brother, Carlos, were able to remove Coles from the house. Police were called to the premises afterwards and Coles was arrested on the charges.
While Coles will not serve any active time for her convictions, she will be placed on probation for the next 20 years.
In another case, Jared Edward Woodley, 23, of the 7400 block of Courthouse Road, accepted a plea deal to an amended charge of unlawful wounding (originally malicious wounding).
In a summary of evidence, on July 7, 2016, Woodley was at a residence playing video games with a female companion when he was confronted by Robert Woodley. The two men got into an argument and physical altercation in the home. As Jared Woodley exited the home, Robert Woodley followed and the fight continued, resulting in Jared stabbing Robert in the shoulder with a box cutter blade. According to Tyler, conflicting testimony from witnesses and the defendant’s version of the story suggested that more than one person may have been involved in the scuffle and that Jared Woodley was defending himself.
Under the agreement, Woodley received a five year sentence with all time suspended, but will be placed on probation over that time period.
