New Kent Middle School considering block schedule for next year

By Andre Jones | February 6, 2017 10:18 pm

New Kent Middle School is proposing a change to students’ schedules for the upcoming year.

Principal Kelley Gray and assistant principal Frank Wheeler presented the option of an A/B block schedule for the upcoming school year to board members on Feb. 6.

Gray said concerns about short class time, a lack of elective courses, and not enough time for remediation led her to form a committee about the possible change. Under the proposal, the block schedule would allow for more electives to be offered to students, smaller class sizes, and more time for teacher instruction. Days would consist of four 90-minute classes on an A/B schedule, meaning they would meet every other day. The principal said early feedback indicated teachers were in favor of the possible changes.

Research into the possible new schedule will continue, as there are some drawbacks that include more classes for teachers. Gray said a survey will be issued to parents, students, and teachers for additional feedback. A final recommendation is expected to be made to the school board prior to the beginning of the next school year.
