New Kent residents killed in Henrico crash involving police officer

Two New Kent County residents died as a result of an accident early Saturday morning in eastern Henrico that involved a Henrico police officer.

James Alan Joyce Jr., 37, and Mary Oakes Babcock, 36, were pronounced dead at the scene of an accident near the intersection of Aspen Shades Parkway and Williamsburg Road.

According to a press release, shortly after 2 a.m. a police officer was traveling westbound on Williamsburg Road when the car apparently struck the victims who were walking at the time. The release also indicates that the on-duty officer was not in a pursuit at the time and that another vehicle may have been involved. Joyce and Babcock died at the scene.
