Gloucester woman dies of injuries as the result of Interstate 64 accident in New Kent
A Gloucester woman has died as the result of her injuries sustained during a May 9 accident on Interstate 64 in New Kent.
Sharyn Robbins, 49, passed away Saturday morning in a local medical facility.
According to a press release, around 1 p.m. on May 9, a jeep traveling eastbound on Interstate 64 near mile marker 204 crossed the median and struck Robbins’ Toyota vehicle in what officers described as an “almost head-on” collision. Robbins was airlifted to a nearby medical facility as a result of the accident. Officers say she was wearing a seatbelt at the time.
The driver of the jeep, identified as 51-year old Robert Coley of Newport News, was also taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injures. Reports say he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.
Although the investigation remains ongoing, police believe driver fatigue played a factor in the crash. Coley is currently being charged with one count each of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
