Richmond man arrested after high speed chase in New Kent

A Richmond man was apprehended after a high speed chase in New Kent along Interstate 64 during the early morning hours on Nov. 18.

Derrell Keith Williams, 33, was arrested on charges of felony eluding, possession of a Schedule II drug, possession of a Schedule II drug with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance while possessing a firearm, possession of ammunition as a convicted felon, misdemeanor driving suspended and/or revoked, DUI, and driving without headlights.

At approximately 1:22 a.m., Trooper Jonathan Miles along with Trooper trainee D.B. Jackson observed a black Lincoln Sedan driving erratically across the center line on Interstate 64 eastbound near mile marker 212 in New Kent. After initiating a traffic stop, the suspect accelerated, reaching speeds up to 130 miles per hour. The suspect turned off his headlights and began swerving to avoid other vehicles, eventually losing control and spinning out in the roadway. The car crashed into an embankment around the 217-mile marker, where a short foot pursuit ensued. Both troopers took the suspect into custody without further incident.

A search of the suspect revealed a substance suspected to be cocaine. A handgun was recovered from inside the vehicle Williams’ was driving.

The investigation remains ongoing with additional charges pending.
