A plan to replace the Route 155 (Courthouse Road) bridge at the border of Charles City and New Kent Counties is part of Virginia Department’s of Transportation (VDOT) six-year secondary plan in New Kent.

County Administrator Rodney Hathaway presented a list of proposed VDOT projects at Wednesday morning’s Board of Supervisors’ work session. Hathaway advised county leaders that while no solid information had not been received from VDOT, an estimation of $75,000-$80,000 in funds for the six-year plan are expected based off past history. Currently, there is approximately $170,000 designated for projects based from fiscal year 2017-18 funding. Funding for these projects are received through state and federal allocations annually.

The replacement of the Chickahominy Bridge at the border of New Kent and Charles City is one of the current projects listed in the plan. While there is no specific timetable for when this will take place, cost of the project is listed at $103,676. According to Hathaway, VDOT designates funds for all bridge projects in the state and list the priorities.

Another project in the six-year plan is to continue addressing site distance, alignment, and shoulder issues on Dispatch Road (Route 613). Approximately $100,000 has been designated. With the completion of the Rural Rustic project to Stage Road, Hathaway proposed the addition of Old Sweet Hall Ferry Road (Route 624) for engineering and surveying to the proposed plan. He also recommended adding Olivet Church Road (Route 618) to address flooding issues near the intersection of Pocahontas Trail (Route 60).

Supervisors agreed to the recommendations by the county administrator and have scheduled a public hearing on the plan at the May regular meeting.
