Alleged robbers indicted by New Kent grand jury

Two men connected to an alleged robbery were indicted by a New Kent grand jury during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.
Ryan Anthony Schutz, 19, of the 5300 block of Hemlock Road, Quinton, and Dev’ron Lemar Cowles, 21, of the 5700 block of Centerville Road, Williamsburg, were each indicted in connection to alleged offenses that took place between Apr. 8-18 of this year.

Both men were each indicted on two counts of robbery where they alleged robbed the residence of Brock Richards. Schutz, however, was slammed with additional allegations. In addition to robbery, he was indicted on two counts each of misdemeanor tampering of vehicles (of Richard Carl Ferrell Jr. and Enrique Pena II), and misdemeanor petty larceny, and one charge each of malicious shooting into a car or train, firearm larceny (of Bryant Lipford), shooting from a vehicle with a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm on school grounds, and credit card larceny (of Lipford).

A third co-defendant, Clifton Calvin Cook III, was indicted during May grand jury proceedings on charges similar to Schutz. Cook’s trial is tentatively set for August.

In an unrelated case, two men were indicted in a scheme that stole credit card information.

Rashawn Marquis Chapman, 29, of the 800 block of Chopin Wood Drive, Newport News, and Robert James Bethel Jr., 30, of the 100 block of View Point Drive, Newport News, were indicted on one count each of credit card larceny and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Bethel was also charged with possession of a credit card forgery device. The offenses allegedly occurred on Feb. 27.

In another case involving co-defendants, Kevin Lamont Jarrell Jr., 30, of the 2500 block of Merle Street, Richmond, and Mark Hugh Thompson, 53, of the 8200 block of Atlee Road, Mechanicsville, were indicted on one charge each of manufacturing a controlled substance (heroin). The alleged offense took place on Dec. 6, 2017.

In other indictments certified by the grand jury:

–Manieca Denise Bailey, 21, of 22 Mobile Lane, Williamsburg, on a single count of lottery ticket larceny. The alleged offense took place on Jan. 24.

–Marvin Jamaal Banks, 42, of the 100 block of San Barbara Drive, Hampton, on one count each of grand larceny and burglary. Banks allegedly broke into B.M. Ricks construction and stole steel appliances on Jan. 3.

–Mark Thomas Clemnti Jr., 34, of the 10000 block of Old Town Lane, New Kent, on one count of driving while suspended stemming from a felony-related DUI conviction (third within 10 years). The alleged offense took place on Jan. 21.

–Shawn Christopher Fitzgerald, 19, of the 13000 block of Old Church Road, New Kent, on one count each of burglary and misdemeanor petty larceny. Fitzgerald allegedly burglarized property belonging to Michael Chenault and stole items from him on Nov. 1, 2017.

–Walice Lee Lewis, 51, of 5 Seminole Drive, Apt. M, Portsmouth, on one count each of driving as a habitual offender and misdemeanor DUI. The alleged offense took place on Mar. 10.

–Michael Malik Winston, 25, of the 200 block of Hodder Lane, Highland Springs, on a single count of manufacturing a controlled substance (heroin). The alleged offense took place on Nov. 29, 2017.
