A Hopewell man will spend the next four years in prison after receiving formal sentencing Friday afternoon in Charles City Circuit Court.

David Alexander Booth, 36, of the 500 block of North 8th Avenue, was sentenced to 10 years in prison with six suspended on one charge of burglary. All 10 years on a grand larceny charge were suspended.

During an Oct. 5 trial, Booth entered into a plea agreement that capped his time of active incarceration to four years, five months. At that trial, it was determined that on Mar. 25, the defendant broke into the former home of Donna Robinson while she was moving. A former neighbor spotted the defendant and notified Robinson, who returned to discover items being taken including jewelry. Booth was eventually found and arrested on the crimes.

In addition to serving four years in prison, Booth must also pay restitution in the amount of $3,019.

In an unrelated case, a Providence Forge man will spend a year in jail after entering a guilty plea to a single count of assault and battery on a family member (third offense) as part of an agreement.

Jamel Percell Bates, 36, received a sentence of five years in jail with four suspended as part of the plea deal. In a summary of evidence, on Sept. 12, Bates and a family member got into an argument over child care and who would be responsible for watching the children that night. When Bates failed to show up to watch the children, the victim went to his house. Bates stepped out of his house and dragged the victim out of the car and a physical altercation ensued. After an investigation, Bates was taken into custody.

The defendant waived his preliminary trial, electing to have the matter heard in circuit court.
