Convicted felon caught firing gun on video sentenced to two years in jail

A Lanexa man will spend the next two years in jail after entering a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a nonviolent convicted felon.

Paul David Reed, 25, of the 9500 block of Diascund Reservoir Road, entered the amended charge (originally possession of ammunition by a convicted felon) during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.

In a summary of evidence presented by Commonwealth’s Attorney Linwood Gregory, on Aug. 28, co-defendant Kyle Robert Crews, 22, of the 1200 block of Quaker Road, Quinton, met with a deputy after being arrested on a charge of possession of a weapon by a violent convicted felon. During that interview, Crews showed the deputy on his phone video of Reed, who was convicted in 2015 grand larceny charges), firing a gun. The officer was able to obtain a date, time, and location with the use of geotagging and obtained a warrant for the defendant’s arrest. When Reed was apprehended, several firearms were recovered along with a tactical protective vest.

Under the agreement, Reed received a five-year sentence with three years suspended. The two years of active time imposed are mandatory minimums under the state statute.

In other Monday morning court proceedings:

–Manieca Denise Bailey, of 22 Mobile Lane, Williamsburg, entered a guilty plea to an amended charge of misdemeanor lottery ticket theft (originally felony lottery ticket larceny).

In a summary of evidence, on Jan. 24, 2018, Bailey worked at the 7-Eleven in Eltham as an employee and begin to steal tickets and cash them over a two-day span. After receiving a call from the establishment’s owner, New Kent investigators reviewed film of Bailey committing the crimes. The defendant confessed later that she stole the tickets in an attempt to help her financial situation.

Formal sentencing for Bailey is scheduled for Apr. 22 and she could be sentenced to up to 12 months in jail. She must pay $450 in restitution for the lottery ticket winnings that she had taken.

–Amber Marie Putze, 32, of the 8000 block of North Henpeck Road, Quinton, entered a straight guilty plea to one count of possession of heroin.

In a summary of evidence, on Aug. 1, 2018, a New Kent deputy responded to Putze’s residence after receiving a call on a possible drug overdose. Upon arriving, the defendant had overdosed, and the officer used Narcan to revive her. After Putze regained consciousness, the officer received consent to search her change purse. Inside the bag was a folded twenty dollar bill with a small plastic bag containing a white substance inside of it. When asked about it, Putze eventually admitted to the officer it was heroin.

Putze received a six-year jail sentence with four years, eight months suspended (one year, four months to serve). She also received an additional three months for violating probation.
